This painting was made, or at least started, at the 2nd annual Art Night Lock-In at the school where I teach. Everything I paint is somehow spiritually motivated and this still life was no different. The figure is an old African wooden sculpture and I've always enjoyed the serene and contemplative expression on the face. The plant in the background suggests nature/creation to me and I couldn't stop thinking about Psalm 46:10, "Be still and know that I am God". This is a terrific reminder for someone like myself who can often be consumed by my "to-do" list each day and forget to slow down long enough to acknowledge God and thank him for all He's done.
